About Advocates for Action

Who?
advocates for action is a youth led advocacy group coordinated by Students Partnership Worldwide (SPW)

What?
advocates for action aims to increase access to sexual and reproductive health services, information and supplies for young people in developing countries

Why?
• Globally, 67% of young men and 80% of young women are unable to correctly identify prevention methods of HIV transmission every year 100 million new cases of largely treatable STIs, excluding HIV, occur amongst young people under 25
• Pregnancy is a leading cause of death for women aged 15-19 worldwide. Mothers aged 15 to 19 are twice as likely to die in childbirth as those in their twenties
• Every year, up to four million adolescents have unsafe abortions

How?
advocates for action challenges decision-makers to take action on Youth SRH&R and create positive change through:

- focusing on young people in development plans – this means guaranteeing funding into research for young people’s sexual and reproductive health, services and programmes.

- involving the next generation; encouraging young people to be involved in the decision making that affects them

- promoting Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRH&R) education and services
• prioritising access to appropriate services and information
• endorsing and promoting compulsory SRH&R education in national curricula worldwide
